Audio lingo: Mid-side recording

Mid-side – or M/S – recording is a way of setting up two microphones to create a wide stereo image. The mid microphone is placed to face the sound you want to record. The side microphone must be a figure-8 microphone (such as a ribbon). It’s placed at about the same spot as the mid microphone but aimed differently, like 90º off-axis.

Tascam announce the TM-ST1 stereo microphone

Tascam has announced the TM-ST1 Mid-Side Stereo Microphone. The TM-ST1 allows the user to select between 90 degree and 120 degree stereo pickup patterns to vary how much of the ambience, room sound or background noise should be captured. The Mid-Side pickups help create a very wide stereo image.
