Mojave Audio debuts microphone for voice-overs

November 17, 2008 Stiff Leave a Comment

I found an article on Broadcast Engineering about a new Mojave microphone for voice-overs (among other things) called MA-201. I read about this several months ago for the first time, but perhaps it was released just now.

From Mojave:

The MA-201 fet is a large diaphragm, phantom-powered, solid-state condenser microphone with a fixed cardioid pattern. With its roots in a lineage of microphone designs by David Royer, the MA-201 fet gives warm, full-bodied reproductions of vocals and instruments, with none of the shrillness and high frequency distortion artifacts that are often encountered with modern condenser microphones.

Utilizing a 3-micron gold-sputtered capsule, high-quality Jensen audio transformer, military-grade FET and custom designed low-noise resistors, the MA-201 fet performs at a level reminiscent of some of the best loved classic condenser microphones. Each MA-201 fet microphone is carefully tested and evaluated, then packaged in its protective case with a professional grade shockmount.

For what it’s worth, I’ve heard good things about Mojave (but have never tested anything by them), David Royer is considered a really good microphone builder (mainly ribbons actually, which this isn’t), and among recommended applications listings, broadcast and voice-over is mentioned.

Some detailed features for the more geeky fellows:

• Hand-selected 3-micron 1” capsule
• Jensen audio transformer
• Military-grade FET
• Custom designed low-noise resistors
• Ultra clean signal path

The Mojave website doesn’t list a price, but it’s $695 at Sweetwater.
