Are you an independent podcaster trying to “make it”? What does “make it” mean to you, and what are the biggest challenges you’re facing in getting there? What’s actually important to you as a podcaster?
These are just some of the questions we want to answer and share with podcasters and the wider industry, but we need your help.

How did we get here?
During a team brainstorming session we sat down to think about a few of the wider issues that were missing for our readers at The Podcast Host and our amazing community of podcasters at Alitu. One key idea that kept resonating was that of ‘available space’ for independent podcasters and how this tribe of diligent and dedicated podcasters, our tribe, could help to shape the future of the podcasting industry if only their collective voice was a little bit louder.
It is no surprise that as an organisation we are both invested in and inspired by these independent podcasters and additionally, that we are constantly blown away by the quality of podcasts coming from indypoders (we might have just made that word up) around the world. Despite this vested interest, a lot of these podcasts don’t get the listens nor the credibility they deserve, thus diminishing their effect in helping to shape the industry according to their core values.
Where are the events for these individuals? Where are their opportunities to sit and share their experiences? What space is the industry making for these indypoders who have a message to share but don’t necessarily have the time, the finances or the interest in taking their podcast to an industry leading level. With these questions in mind we reached a couple of solutions that we hope will help to provide opportunities for our indypoders, further develop our industry and allow our tribe to say “Hey, we’ve got a voice and we’re here to make it heard.”
Enter Indypod Census & Summit
Announcing for the first time two very exciting projects from The Podcast Host, in collaboration with some core industry partners including She Podcasts, Afros and Audio and many more, we give you Indypod Census and Indypod Summit.
Cut from the same cloth, in an effort to embrace the voice of Indypoders, the Indypod Census and Indypod Summit both aim to be a template from which we can begin to ask and answer important questions in the high velocity and developing community of independent podcasters.
This November we go live with Indypod Census which will provide an essential sounding board of research, compiled in an effort to shape the independent podcast scene in a cohesive and inclusive way. We invite you and your Indypod peers to participate in a twenty question census that will be analysed and published across the podcast industry. With this data we will gain an essential perspective of what podcasters are thinking, where the space is headed and what opportunities are being missed.
The Census runs from November 7th through December 9th, is open to all podcasters with a core focus on those independent podcasters who record, run and operate their own podcasts for personal or work related reasons. If you’re passionate about podcasting and believe independent podcasters should have a say in how the industry progresses, in an inclusive way, with you and your peers in mind, fill the Census and join the Indypoder tribe.
